Funk n Groove take over the Sandwich Company, Diamond for the 2nd time this NYE
Tickets on sale at £10, Doors at 8.30pm with DJs Lounge Lizard, Stray Kitten and Type One
Tues 29th Dec 2015
Continuing their run of great events across the town, independent promoters Funk n Groove are back with more on New Year’s Eve, this Thursday 31st December from 8.30pm at the Sandwich Company in the heart of the Diamond with their NYE Hoedown and the promise of one big sparkly shindig to see us into 2016.
With a limited number of tickets now on sale at £10, the night includes a line-up of three of the town’s finest DJs, a Glitter Ball dance floor, chill out area and full bar to include a range of local craft beers, speciality spirits and the finest of bubbles for your 12 bells toast to 2016. Deemed as a night for those who’d prefer not to be packed in like a sardine, this is one party that’s more Star Dust than Tin Can.
Following on from the recent sell-out Halloween party in the same venue and with previous success stories including Hospice Rocks at the Nerve Centre under her belt, the upcoming NYE party is shaping up to be another stonker for local mover and shaker, Rachael Eastwood and her trusty team, none of them strangers to the Derry social scene.
As for the soundtrack to see in the New Year, expect an eclectic selection of music through the decades with old skool hip-hop, rock past and present, finest funk, 80’s shoe-gazers, 90’s foot-stompers and good old party tunes amongst the music selection. Sandwiched in between Derry’s acclaimed hip-hop guru, Type One and local muso and Grand Central Bar’s favourite Resident DJ, Lounge Lizard, David Doherty, will be Derry’s prodigal daughter and Ibiza export, Stray Kitten, who’ll no doubt throw a few kooky numbers into the mix while she’s at it.
Tickets for the event are going fast and can be purchased from the Grand Central Bar. For the chance to win a party package for the NYE celebration (prize including 4 tickets, complimentary prosecco and VIP seating) simply like and share the FB post:

Ibiza Rocks House hosts its Halloween Hooley on Sat 31st October
It’s that time of year again, the witches and the vamps are out and about and Halloween in Ibiza has turned into one giant excuse to party, nowhere more so than at Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes Hotel.Saturday 31st October is the devilish date for the diary with a monster line up of DJs, live entertainment from dead rock-stars and cauldrons full of spooky surprises from 9pm until the creatures of the night go back underground.
Under the name of VAMP, this is the 4th year that Ibiza Rocks House has been transformed into an authentic hotel of horror, placing itself firmly on the rowdy route of Halloween High Jinx on the island.
As far as the music and entertainment is concerned, organisers Leanne (Queen Vampire) Chilton and Jillian (Back from the Dead) Canney, have cast more than just the one magic spell and conjured up a line-up of some of the island’s finest DJs and musicians to keep the creepin’ crawlin’ critters on the dancefloor from 9pm till the wee small hours. Leading the DJ Army of Darkness, one of Ibiza’s greatest, the absolute legend that is DJ Alfredo Fiorito, joined by fellow islanders Andy Baxter, Tom Crane, Pete Gooding, The Brothers Grim, Scott Gray and Paul Reynolds (Melon Bomb), Stray Kitten and, of course, the Ibiza Rocks House summer residents 2015, Lisa Chadderton and DJ Paulette. Spread across Chez Fez and Freddie’s Bar, expect a monster mash-up of house, hip hop, funk, rock n roll and everything in between as the night gets naughtier and the freaks get freakier.
And that’s not even the half of it. As far as live music goes, Paco Fernandez and his band will take over the Plaza early bells, whilst inside the haunted house, the sultry sound of Samantha Carrie Smith as Amy Winehouse will fill the air from midnight. On top of that, guests are invited to get their best screeches ready for Sunny’s Killer Karaoke. Party-goers should also be prepared to have their ivories tickled by Crazy Piano Man, Roberto Campoli, on the putrid Pikes Piano accompanied by one of the island’s favourite vocalists, Nell Shakespeare.
Fans of freaky films will find a suitable space dedicated to spine-tingling cinema classics throughout the evening. This, as well as all special effects and projections, will be brought to the hotel by lighting professionals Aladdin Lights.
For those who have an appetite for more than just blood and guts, Pikes Restaurant, Room 39, will be open from 9pm serving up a feast fit for any fiend. Places are limited and booking is essential.
With prizes for the best costumes and spooky surprises at every creepy corner, this is one event that will return to haunt your nightmares- in a good way- for a long time to come. Fancy Dress is absolutely obligatory!
A limited number of pre-sale tickets are now on sale at 10€ for the first-come, first-served. Standard entrance price is 15€. For more details on how to purchase contact Leanne at Ibiza Rocks House or through the FB event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/591789534257092

· DERRY’S NEWEST CULINARY EXPERIENCE CONFIRMS ITS INAUGURATION ON SATURDAY 25THJULY
· SICILIAN OWNERS PROMISE AN AUTHENTIC TASTE OF ITALY
· OPENING HOURS MON-SAT 9AM-11PM, SUN 1PM-5PM
(CAN FIX/ DERRY/22 JULY 2015)
As the weekend draws ever nearer, the owners and staff of Derry’s new Italian restaurant are getting ready to fling open their doors with a hearty ‘Benvenuto a Spaghetti Junction’ with the date of opening to the public confirmed as Saturday 25th July.
In the months leading up to the inauguration, the Spaghetti Junction team have been working around the clock lovingly creating their ‘bambino’, a dream project made reality by its six-strong group of Sicilian partners, led by Mr. Cataldo Magnifico, a resident of the city since 2009.
The total transformation of the premises on the corner of William St and Rossville St has been nothing if not an eye-opener for the team and the public alike, not least for the mural spanning its gable wall- Sophia Loren sits proudly on her vintage Vespa moped, surrounded by a selection of the very ingredients that will play a key role in the restaurant’s menu.
Promising to showcase an authentic taste of Italy, owners have brought a handpicked team of chefs from their native Sicily to get the full flavour of the Italian experience on the plates and the palates of their clientele. Head Chef Rosalba Mancini has worked in the industry in and around her native country for more than 30 years and has worked closely on the Spaghetti Junction menu with Magnifico and Co. Expect hearty, home cooked dishes with a distinct nod to the ones like-a Mama used to make. Indeed, many of the recipes have been brought from the tables of the Spaghetti Junction families back in Sicily.
By Mancini’s side, Chef Francesco Tranchida, master of his trade and creator of delicious Italian pastries including Cannoli and Cestini and Chef Angelo Lo Grande who’ll be manning the authentic wood-burning oven in the restaurant, built from scratch using traditional methods.
A team of locally sourced staff are also on board for front and back of house and the construction of the restaurant itself has also relied heavily on a large number of local businesses, suppliers and employees in the run up to the opening as well as going forward.
As far as décor is concerned, the space has been transformed to transport the diner to a typical Italian piazza with views of Sicily’s Mount Etna, bringing the al fresco ambience of Italian life to the interior of the ex- Bogside Artists’ Gallery and indeed, to the Bogside itself.
Speaking of the upcoming inauguration, Mr.Magnifico said, “I have been in love with Derry, its people and its culture since I first came to visit- then I fell in love with a Derry girl so there was no going back. Now, I want to try to make Derry fall in love with my culture and in particular, Italian food. We’ve worked hard over the last months to get the restaurant ready to open and have already had great support from the people of the town. We’re looking forward to giving them a taste of Italy!”
Opening Monday to Saturday from 9am-11pm, Spaghetti Junction’s evening menu will start from 5pm. During the day, a menu of lighter snacks and pastries will accompany that other staple Italian tradition- coffee of all shapes and sizes. OnSundays, the premises will open from 1pm-5pm. Saturday 25th July will mark the inauguration of the restaurant with a separate private event taking place earlier in the week. Sunday 26th July from 2pm sees a visit from the Bad Samaritans Scooter Club, a local group of Mods and Scooter Boys from the 80’s whose Vespa & Lambretta Line Up outside the restaurant will fit in rather nicely with the restaurant’s intrinsic love of all things vintage and Italian.

With only days to go until Derry City Council’s Craft and Design Awards unveils its winners as part of Derry/Londonderry’s Enterprise Week, one local lady is crossing her fingers, toes and not to mention, her knitting needles, after being shortlisted in two categories in the competition.
Born and bred in Omagh, Co.Tyrone, Bronagh Connolly learned to knit at her mother’s knee at the tender age of 5. After mastering the casting on of 5 stitches, she made her first hairband, in garter stitch and containing an assortment of tiny beginner’s mistakes. Since that first achievement and over the years that followed, her knitting needles have been lifted and put down again many times as her life progressed. In the interim, at the turn of the millennium, Bronagh moved to the Big Smoke of Derry/Londonderry to further her career in pharmacy and has since become something of an adopted daughter of the town she loves so well.
In 2007, whilst hunting high and low for a present for a friend’s new baby, Bronagh could find nothing that stood out from the usual new baby gifts, and so, the knitting needles made their welcome reappearance to her life. Wool was purchased, patterns perused and she got to work making a handcrafted gift as unique as the baby she was making it for. Et voilà- her bespoke Donegal tweed blanket and jumper in was created, loved by baby and mama alike.
This starting point led to a plethora of more baby bits and bobs and Bronagh soon progressed to childrenswear, then ladies’, men’s, accessories and homewear. The list got longer and more adventurous and gradually patterns were abandoned and graph paper and iPhone notes replaced them. Her vast collection of needles kept growing, as did the stash of wool and eventually, the art of crochet was added to her skill set.
There came a point when a clear preference started to emerge and her love for lace knitting grew. Aran and chunky weights, constructed in unusual directions, each piece that flew off her needles an original and one-off. It was time to give her craft a name and so, her label, Crocknit Designs became a reality. Since its conception, Bronagh’s work has found its way into many’s a Derry home as well as being exported to the USA, Spain and further afield.
More recently, in October 2014, Bronagh won a Designers Choice award and an Online Choice award at the prestigious Edel MacBride Sliabh Liag Awards, inspiring her to up her game and submit two entries for this year’s Craft and Design Awards as part of the Enterprise Week. As a result, she has been shortlisted for the People’s Choice and the Knitwear Award.
Bronagh’s design process is based in construction, engineering and mathematics – finding a yarn, deciding what she wants to do with it and designing a process to enable that. She will sample, rip out, rework, use different tensions until satisfied, and then use the stitch count of the sample to design the pattern, based on the shapes of the pattern pieces required. Once that process is complete, things get really exciting and the tailors dress form comes out, the pieces are draped, changes are made, pins are used, and sometimes slowly, sometimes instantly, the final piece takes shape. Her finest work is in the finishing touches – the edging, the hiding of threads, making inside and out equally beautiful. And finally, the piece is blocked letting the stitches settle into their permanent home, creating uniformity and that unique beauty that Bronagh Connolly and her Crocknit Designs brand is becoming well known for. Only then is her garment declared ready and she is ready to show it off to the world.
And when she’s not busy being nominated for such prestigious accolades, she finds herself back at her mother’s knee, teaching her teacher how to do yarn overs and short rows. The circle is complete.
For these particular awards, Bronagh’s pieces can be seen in the Guildhall this Friday 27th February at the Craft and Design Awards Showcase prior to the gala event.

Saturday 22nd November @ 11pm
The Grand Central Bar, Derry
One of Derry/Londonderry’s most popular watering holes, The Grand Central, is getting set for a wickedy whack weekend with two floors of fun and flava taking over this Saturday night, 22nd November from 11pm till the doorman calls for your glasses, please…
Downstairs and it’s a welcome return for Ibiza’s Stray Kitten, back in the game after her break to have a bambino, with the promise of one of her renowned musical time-travelling sessions, spanning the decades with a big, fat combo of anything goes as long as it’s groovy- no EDM here, thank you very much, Stray Saturdays start here…
Recently relocated to her Maiden City after almost twenty years living and working in the world’s party capital, Ibiza, over the years she has played at innumerous island venues, including the world’s biggest club, Privilege and legendary club night, Manumission and most recently was a regular fixture at Ibiza Rocks House where she entertained the troops at a lengthy list of events, including ‘An Evening with Howard Marks’ and the annual Freddie Rocks Fundraiser for the Mercury Phoenix Trust.
Up the stairs and Hip Hop Sessions are back in the room, with resident DJ Type One in charge of the Technics 1200’s. A champion of the city’s Hip Hop scene, he has created an incredibly diverse and interactive event, distinctive to any other night happening in Derry right now. Whilst it’s not exactly an Open Mic night, those with an inclination to show their skills are invited to make themselves known- Type One is never lonely and guest acts abound at his events.
As for his style, Type one simply mixes music that invokes a sense of nostalgia for the golden era of hip hop while at the same time takes it towards the future sound of hip hop. With a keen ear for samples combined with intelligent lyrics, he works hard to honour the founders of the genre. Type One also recently supported Hip Hop legend Snoop Dogg.
At his side this Saturday, Gerard i2 is a fearless hip hop MC and producer from Strabane, Northern Ireland. The rapper, who regularly plays live shows alongside his drummer Chris Patton, has three independent album releases already under his belt and a fourth in the pipeline. i2 has shared the stage with acts including Florence and the Machine, Maverick Sabre, Tinchy Stryder and The Stone Roses to name but a few.
Put it all together and it’s looking like this might actually be the night that the roof is raised right off the place- aficionados of good music, good people and good craic, get your taxi to drop you off here!

CAN FIX IBIZA PR
Triple CD compiled and mixed by David Phillips / PBR Streetgang
Released 4 August on Seamless Recordings
(CAN FIX/IBIZA/29 JULY 2014)
With less than a week to go, the countdown is truly on until the BHS’ very first compilation CD, aptly titled the ‘Boutique Hostal Salinas Ibiza Summer Sessions’ out on the Seamless Recordings label, hits the streets on 4th August.
The three discs of awesomeness, lovingly put together by BHS co-owner and Ibiza resident DJ, David Phillips with a helping hand from PBR Streetgang (aka the very versatile DJ duo Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe- fans, friends and fixtures of the Boutique Hostal Salinas) is a clever combo of down tempo, nu disco and deep house and features tracks from the likes of Goldfrapp, DFA, Pyschemagik, Nancy Wang, Bonar Bradberry, PBR Streetgang, Art of Tones, John Talabot, Prins Thomas and Ewan Pearson.
Aforementioned Phillips, who has also been a We Love…Space DJ for the last 10 years, is grinning with glee at the long awaited arrival of the 3CD saying, “For years and years I’ve seen compilation after compilation come out and wondered why the hell we never brought out our own. Here’s what we hope to be the first of many!”
Responsible for CDs 1&2, Phillips is a master of crossing genres and has never been tagged as a house-only DJ, so his desire to produce a compilation that was both upbeat and danceable without being restricted to house was understandable.
‘Sometimes, I feel like people think that there’s just 2 kinds of Ibiza compilation, either a 4/4 mix or some sort of soundtrack to listen to lying on your back on the beach. I’d like to fill in the gaps there”.
For CD1 then, expect echoes of the BHS’ Lo Cura Lounge daytime vibe with West Coast rock, Weatherall-esque dub techno, 80’s Italo-disco and indefinable indie gems all playing their part. Think lazy afternoons filled with much cherished, lovingly selected and perfectly delivered music.
On CD2 David Phillips presents the sound of Lo Cura Lounge by night, describing it as a chance to ‘get your boogie on’. It represents years of a misspent youth and endless hours spent dancing to the great DJ’s who have passed through the Boutique Hostal Salinas and the Lo Cura Bar, influencing the very essence of both locations.
CD3 is the sound of two guys at the top of their game playing with soul, funk and copious amounts of know-how. We’re talking about the duo that is PBR Streetgang aka Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe, a pair who have released on critically acclaimed labels such as 2020 Vision, Future Boogie, Hot Creations, and Southern Fried Records.
On account of all of the above, it just wouldn’t be right, in the eyes of the Boutique Hostal Salinas Three (Phillips plus partners Duesi Wolfmeir and Anita Dey) not to commemorate such an occasion. To that end, this Sunday 3rd August and the BHS gang shall seize the day and raise glasses to their brand new musical baby, cranking up the volume whilst they do so. Join them from 6pm till, no doubt, very, very late to hear their Ibiza Summer Sessions sound out across Salinas and be in with a chance to take home your copy. Joining Phillips behind the decks, another stalwart of the BHS, Ms. Daisy Heartbreaker plus a very special guest TBA. All things considered, this is one little Lo Cura Lounge get together that really should not be missed.

CAN FIX IBIZA PR
BHS’ 1ST COMPILATION CD LAUNCH CONFIRMED FOR 4TH AUG
LO CURA LOUNGE GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
(CAN FIX/IBIZA/22 JULY 2014)
Knee-deep in the throes of summer and it’s all go at the Boutique Hostal Salinas with their weekly events growing in size by the week and a number of new and exciting additions to the calendar confirmed for July and August.
First up, and it is indeed a first for the BHS, as one of the island’s most reputable events, Urban in Ibiza, confirms its appearance at the Salinas hotspot on the 2nd August. Now in its sixth year on the island, the art/fashion/music extravaganza has been credited with bringing a steady selection of the world’s best street artists to Ibiza and as far as the event at the Boutique Hostal Salinas is concerned, names currently being bandied about include Inkie, Elmo Hood and Dan Kitchener with more to be confirmed in the run up to the street art spectacle at Salinas. With a following that includes both junior and senior aficionados of graffiti and all that that entails, the Urban in Ibiza warm-up event at the BHS is a chance to see first-hand how its done with live painting from the artists included in the programme. An absolute must for your Ibiza calendar.
As far as the BHS’ baby, Lo Cura Lounge, is concerned, things in that department have been going from great to greater with Fridays and Sundays both dedicated to the spin-off project and both gatherings encompassing that ‘real Ibiza feeling’ that many strive to create but few manage to pull off. Andrew Livesey, Chief Fixer at We Love…Space (the venue for the Sunday get togethers), summed it up rather succinctly, saying: “The Lo Cura crew have managed to do, in various venues on the island, what many before them have tried and failed to do: – they create an atmosphere, vibe and party that is greater than the sum of all its parts. Their bar in Ibiza town was my favourite in the world and the Boutique Hostal Salinas is my current favourite place to hang out on the island, not to mention that the Lo Cura Lounge takeovers of El Salon at We Love …Space are the best parties that that room has ever seen”. The next date set for that El Salon takeover is 17 Aug when the Lo Cura crew join forces with Italian sensations, Souldrops, stepping up to the platos.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, or rather the BHS terrace, the Once Upon a Time market has been inundated with new local and international designers and artisans setting up stall every Sunday from 6-11pm, amongst them Holga Garrosa, Evita Puch, Jahaira Cobeña and Die As Trash. With DJ Daisy Heartbreaker providing the music to shop by and many visitors availing of lunch in the restaurant at the same time, Sundays are really rather special at the Boutique Hostal Salinas.
Speaking of lunch and back in the kitchen, and the new concept restaurant, La Marisquería at Boutique Hostal Salinas, continues to climb the scale of culinary greatness with its predominantly seafood menu proving a success amongst resident guests and locals alike. But it’s not just the shellfish that is proving popular with chef Anxelinho Ares’ meat dishes also going down a treat and in particular, huge numbers of the House Burger have been breaking all records as word on that spreads across the island. As an added incentive, the restaurant also hosts Special Saturdays with Lobster & Chips at 35€pp and Tuesday Treats with La Mariscada fish plate at 45€pp.
Back in the boogie bit of the Boutique, and a special nod this week to Bruno from Ibiza and Angel Cielo’s party, Sunshine People, which this week brings in some very special guests from Brazil in the shape of acclaimed DJ duo MartJaz, flown in fresh from the football fever and ready to have a ball of a different kind this Thursday 24th July from 7pm at the BHS. Sunshine People shows no sign of stopping till the end of the season, with special guests announced weekly.
And finally, for this time round, and it’s been a while since we last mentioned it but it’s with great pleasure that we can finally confirm the release date of the BHS’ very first compilation CD, aptly titled the ‘Boutique Hostal Salinas Ibiza Summer Sessions’ out on the Seamless Recordings label and due to hit the streets on 4th August.
Aforementioned David Phillips, was last reported to be beside himself with joy at the long awaited arrival of the CD saying, “For years and years I’ve seen compilation after compilation come out and wondered why the hell we never brought out our own. Here’s what we hope to be the first of many!”
The CD will also be available to download online but meanwhile, for your media lugholes only, here’s a taster of what’s in store:
All in all then, as the trusty threesome* behind the BHS prepare to break the back of summer, seems like they’re doing a damned fine job thus far of creating one more memorable medley of a season at the Boutique Hostal Salinas.

CAN FIX IBIZA PR
(CAN FIX PR, GLASGOW, 12 JUNE 2014)
Obesity is one of the biggest health problems facing the UK and, all too often, it’s our lower limbs and feet that bear the brunt of being overweight. As part of The College of Podiatry’s annual Feet for Life month in June, local podiatrist Mr Ciaran Canney Bsc (Hon) MChs, from Glasgow’s only fully accredited podiatry clinic, Foot Medic, in Bearsden, is working to raise awareness of the foot problems and conditions linked to being overweight. Asked for his thoughts on the problems being highlighted by Feet for Life Month, Canney says, “It is a serious problem but one that, in the majority of cases, can be solved. Here at Foot Medic, we run free diabetic foot checks for diabetes sufferers who have concerns about their feet. We can also advise on exercise to help get people mobile and start reducing the risk of obesity linked disease”.
“Being overweight and/or obese places increased pressure on your feet, ankles and lower limbs, which makes you more likely to experience arthritis, foot pain and skin problems on the feet. It can also create a debilitating cycle where people put on weight and then find it difficult to stay mobile and exercise, which can result in even further weight gain and make it harder to lose weight and regain good health.
Other key foot problems associated with obesity:
- Changes in the size of your feet – being overweight can cause feet to ‘splay’ and become wider and the arch of the foot flatter. This is particularly evident in childhood. When you are young the bones in your body haven’t hardened so if a child is overweight the arch of the foot can flatten and cause a change in the whole structure of the foot. It is vital to wear a comfortable, well-fitting shoe. For those who do have wide feet it can be more challenging to find a shoe that fits, but there are increasing numbers of footwear brands which are offering wider fittings. Don’t try to squeeze your feet into narrow shoes which rub or pinch.
- Gout – gout is a type of arthritis, it is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a natural daily by-product made in the body when it breaks down chemicals in cells known as purines. It is usually excreted through the kidneys, but it can build up and form crystals in the joints which cause the pain and inflammation associated with gout. It can also cause progressive damage to joints. Common symptoms include severe pain and inflammation in one or two joints; it usually affects the base of the big toe. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing gout.
- Osteoarthritis – osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is caused by stress to the cartilage in the joints, which can result from injury or general wear and tear. Being overweight places increased pressure on the joints, particularly on your feet, which increases your chances of developing osteoarthritis. Symptoms include stiffness, pain and inflammation.
- Type 2 Diabetes – being overweight makes you more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes, a condition where the body cannot produce enough insulin to function properly, or the body’s cells become insulin resistant. Diabetes can have a significant impact on your feet. It can result in nerve damage (neuropathy), where you lose the ability to feel certain sensations in the feet such as heat or pain, It can cause poor blood supply, which reduces the skin’s ability to repair when damaged, and it can also alter the body’s ability to fight infection. All of these factors can mean the feet are at a much greater risk of becoming infected and it is vital to check your feet regularly and go for regular foot checks with a podiatrist, GP or practice nurse.
- Foot pain – being overweight causes a disturbance in the way you walk which can contribute to foot pain. The bones, muscles and tendons in your feet are not designed to carry excess weight so this puts strain on the foot which can result in tenderness, swelling and pain. All of the above conditions can cause foot pain, but other common problems associated with obesity which cause foot pain are:
o Posterior tibial tendonitis – pain in the tendon that runs along the inside of the ankle and the foot
o Plantar fasciitis – an inflammation in the thick ligamentous connective tissue that runs from the heel to the ball of the foot
o Hindfoot arthritis – an inflammation in the back part of the foot
Having recently received an official recognition as Glasgow’s only fully accredited Podiatry Clinic, it’s clear that placing one’s feet in Canney’s care can only be a good thing; “As a podiatrist, I want to help people address and overcome any foot problems and pain they are experiencing so that they can stay as mobile as possible and experience a better quality of life. If you do experience painful feet on a regular basis, please don’t ignore it, there is nearly always something that can be done to help”.
